Missionaries
Our Missionaries
As part of One Wilderness’ goal of edifying and encouraging the church of the interior of Alaska, we aim to help local churches send missionaries to this field. We accomplish this in two primary ways. First, we invite these missionaries into our network of like-minded workers where they receive encouragement and care for their selves and their ministries. Second, we process tax-deductible donations made to One Wilderness and suggested to be designated for them. 100% of suggested gift designations go to supporting our fellow missionaries.
The Lord has used, is using, and will continue to use missionaries from a vast array of agencies and missiological philosophies to expand his kingdom across the globe. That said, based on the example of the sending of Paul and Barnabas from the church at Antioch in Acts 13:1-4, and the subsequent example of Paul’s missionary journeys, One Wilderness believes that the Holy Spirit sends missionaries (13:4) by moving within a local church and her leadership to commend (Acts 13:3, 14:26, 15:40) them to the foreign missions field and subsequently continue to support those endeavors as their sending church.
In other words, churches, not mission agencies, send missionaries. We see it as one of our privileged ministry opportunities to serve local churches by helping them do this well. What this means practically, is that One Wilderness missionaries get their marching orders from their local church. It is to them that they look, first and foremost, for shepherding, accountability, training, and strategic planning. And likewise, it is these local churches that take on the responsibility of caring and providing for their missionaries. However, as stated above, these missionaries also join our ministry network family, and One Wilderness works closely with sending churches in each of these areas as well.
The Armstrongs
Thomas and Nancy moved to Alaska in 2022 to serve as missionaries with Missionary Aviation Repair Center. While working as an aircraft mechanic, Thomas was occasionally able to hop on flights out to rural (bush) Alaska. It was on those trips where he learned of the joys and struggles of life off the road system, as well as the challenges of maintaining and spreading the Gospel there.
Since those first trips to the bush, Thomas and Nancy have had the privilege of forming friendships with missionaries, pastors, and residents who live in McGrath, AK. It is through those relationships that they have learned they ways in which they can serve and point others to Christ.
It is exciting to look back and see the many unique ways the Lord has equipped (and is equipping!) both Nancy and Thomas for life and ministry in the bush. Thomas and Nancy welcomed their first child, Boyd, into the world on May 19, 2026.
